2012 Update on Channel.. NYS Parks and Recreation were here the End of April and have marked the channel with spar buoys. The entrance is still a little deeper on the North side, very close to shore and some boats have been able to get out on the south side, again very close to shore. We are awaiting a response from all of the agencies in regards to starting to dredge earlier. (Photo's of 2012 at the bottom of the page)
The Sandy Pond Channel Maintenance Association purchased all the piping needed last year for dredging. Our permit to Dredge is from July 15th to September 1st. We have Contacted the Army Corp of Engineers and The DEC to ask for a variance in our permit to Dredge earlier. With the aide of the Town of Sandy Creek's Supervisor, Nancy Ridgeway we are putting in a plea to dredge earlier for the safety of the boaters and the recreational boaters to have access into Lake Ontario this year. The other agencies will be contacted also, they are the US Fish and Wildlife, and the Department of State. We need volunteers to help set up the piping and the Town of Sandy Creek's Highway Department have been contacted to operate the dredge, but we are looking for operator's that could work with the Highway Department and be trained to operate the dredge. We will also do our Survey of the Barrier beach to assure the piping plover isn't spotted, which is a stipulation on our permit.
