June 20, 2024
Dear Membership, Past, Present and Future, We would like to update all of our members on the progress that has been made to our channel. We look forward to a safe & enjoyable boating season.
SPCMA dredged in the spring of 2024 on the south side of the channel going out into Lake Ontario. We removed 18,456 cubic yards of sand and placed it back on the barrier beach and at Sandy Island State Park. With the water levels so low this spring, if we hadn’t dredged we wouldn’t be able to get out into the Lake with bigger boats. The south side was marked by some small red and green buoys by a private citizen, marking the deeper waters where we dredged. The north side was marked by 2 white pipes to let boaters know the deeper water is close to shore. The north side entrance is shallower.
The NYS Marine Services marked the dangerous rock pile with the 3 danger spar buoys. They are white with 3 orange stripes on them. This rock pile is on your right hand side going out into the Lake and the deeper water is close to the buoys to the left. Please do not go in between the 3 buoys.
SPCMA has received all the ARPA funding awarded to them from Oswego County for dredging projects, totaling $300,000.00. Dredging projects were done in 2022, 2023 & 2024, with a total of 43,051 cubic yards of sand removed. Our past dredge projects were done without enough funding from ARPA and the Association has a debt of $162,510.00 for dredge projects not covered by the payments from the Town of Sandy Creek ($30,000.00 a year) and the ARPA funding. SPCMA has a 5 year dredge permit that allows 36,000 cubic yards of sand to be removed each year. We have to dredge in the spring before the return of the piping plover. After the April 1st date we are required to monitor the barrier beaches for this bird, which is usually done by Kennedy Sullivan. We are required to be done dredging by April 15th.
The Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary will encompass south of Oswego to Sackets Harbor. This is great news for this area. With over 40 shipwrecks and 2 airplane wrecks out in the lake, this should generate tourism into this area. This would be the 16th Sanctuary and the only one in NY. Our U.S. Representative Claudia Tenney is still working on getting Sandy Pond to be designated a safe harbor. If Sandy Pond becomes a safe harbor, we believe the Army Corps of Engineers will maintain the channel.
All donations are greatly appreciated and are tax deductible. There are over 3,000 boats on the pond and even a donation of $25.00 each will make a difference. If you use the channel, please consider donating.
We all want to continue to enjoy the peace and beauty of the beach and Sandy Pond!

We sincerely appreciate any and all donations from the users of the Channel.
Mechanical dredge operations cost more, but remove more sand in a less period of time!
Five cent Can Returns have raised $21,876.75 to date - Sandy Creek Redemption center will take them or Greene Point Marina has a can boat where they can be dropped off.
